Gear & Getting Started

One big advantage of the River Run is just how simple it is to get equipped and in the water. Truly, there’s no need to break the bank. Whether casting the Maumee River from shore, in chest waders, or from a small boat near a Maumee River boat launch, there are just a few essentials necessary to put quality walleyes on the stringer:

Rod & Reel: Most medium weight graphite fishing rods will do the trick. While most fishermen prefer using a spinning set-up, just about any reel (rigged with 6lb., 8lb., or 10lb.-test line) will handle a scrappy river-run walleye.

Tackle: Due to strict regulations (meant to reduce snagging, or fowl-hooking fish somewhere other than in the mouth), only single hooks are allowed (see regulations). Therefore, two types of jigs – floating and lead-head – make up 99% of the Maumee fisherman’s arsenal.

No matter which jig type you choose, weight and color are where the decisions come in. Have a broad selection of weights ranging from 1/8 to 5/8 ounce, and make sure you have a good stock of brightly colored rubber twist tails to persuade aggressive strikes. Tails are available in a rainbow of colors from local tackle vendors, but 3” twisters in white, yellows, pinks, and oranges are all standard fare. Live bait typically is not necessary (though later in the spring, white bass fishermen can get schools worked into a frenzy with lively shiners!).

If you feel uncertain about what you’re casting, observe those fishing around you. Feel free to ask for advice – riverside jig vendors will know what’s hot and what’s not. You can always stop in at area Maumee River bait shops as well.

Accessories: Think about adding these items to your packing list –
•    Short-handled landing net (with chord tie off so that you don’t loose it in the current)
•    Brimmed hat and sunglasses (for improved visibility & eye protection)
•    Layered clothing (that water can be cold, and it’s always easier to take layers off!)
•    Raingear (not that it would ever rain while you’re in Wood County!)
•    Reliable stringer and fish cooler (to bring home your catch, if you so choose)
